One of elizabeth peters earliest novels the first of the vicky bliss series borrower of the night does not quite have as well developed a sense of satire as many of her later books it is more like the romances of a writer like victoria holt than a spoof of the genre some elements of the romance genre are made fun of. The first vicky bliss mystery by she has the perfect german accent required in borrower of the night and the limitless range of voices needed to distinguish the characters from one another she even does an excellent job with the mens voices but for me her performance of the minor character miss burton puts the frosting on this . A missing masterwork in wood the last creation of a master carver who died in the violent tumult of the sixteenth century may be hidden in a medieval german. The charlemagne talisman with its gold filigree volutes and enormous azure blue sapphire has caught vicky bliss attention when a man is found murdered with an enchanting copy of the antiquity in his pocket along with an odd set of hieroglyphs vicky follows the trail of the gifted genius who created the fake to the narrow streets of the anitquity markets in rome. No one mixes history comedy and mystery with the same deft touch as elizabeth peters and although borrower of the night isnt as good as the vicky bliss mysteries in which she matches wits with john smythe street of five moons is the first its still terrific fun
